Bandag Manufacturing has received the Environmental Innovation award from the Queensland Bus Industry Council (QBIC) in recognition of its significant investment in green initiatives.
The number one tyre retreading brand in Australasia, Bandag retreads more than 550,000 truck casings every year – saving them from ending up as waste.
“At Bandag, we pride ourselves on being as environmentally friendly as we can and it’s extremely gratifying to be formally recognised for our efforts,” said Greg Nielsen, General Manager Retread Business.
“We want to make sure our commitment to the environment doesn’t end with our products, and inspire others in the transport industry to do the same.”
“The business has implemented a variety of initiatives at its manufacturing site at Wacol, including rainwater harvesting, a gas boiler burner upgrade and low energy LED lighting.”
“Most recently we invested in two 100 kilowatt solar power systems, which will significantly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions,” Mr Nielsen said.
“We’re also going to double our rainwater harvesting capacity by the end of the year and are finalising a plan to recycle 200 tonnes worth of tread scrap annually.”
Bandag’s relentless drive to innovate has also seen the successful development of Low Rolling Resistant (LRR) retreads, which have a 14% lower rolling resistance coefficient than comparable products.
“Our LRR retreads have proven to deliver between 2% and 6% fuel savings for transport operators, reducing their fuel consumption and subsequent carbon emissions significantly,” Mr Nielsen said.
The award was presented to Bandag at the QBIC’s annual conference in Cairns in April.
Nominees were assessed on their management commitment to the environment and innovation, practical measures in place to address environmental issues, and the extent to which they have been innovative and proactive.
Bandag Manufacturing Pty Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Bridgestone Australia Ltd.
