Tyre tread depth

Learn how to check your tyre tread with our simple test

Understanding tyre tread depth is crucial for your safety and vehicle performance. Our expert tips and straightforward methods will guide you in checking your tread depth, ensuring you maintain optimal grip on the road.

Did you know that when your tyre tread depth falls to 3mm or less, your wet grip significantly decreases?
Worn tyres can lead to poor control in wet conditions, unresponsive handling, and increased risk of air pressure loss.

Stay safer on the road by testing your tread depth with a 20c coin

To measure your tyre’s tread depth, place a New Zealand 20 cent coin into one of the central circumferential grooves of your tyre. If you can see the whole of the number 20, that indicates that your tyre has 2mm or less tread left and it is time to think about investing in some new tyres to make sure you stay safe while driving.

When to replace tyres

As your tyres’ tread wears, their ability to disperse water reduces. This means when conditions are wet, older tyres can increase the time it takes for your car to come to a stop. Legally you are required to replace your tyres when your tread depth wears below 1.5mm, however we recommend maintaining a tread depth of at least 3mm to avoid a reduction in tyre capability, especially in the wet.
